The Rectorate, which consists of Rector Andrea Kurz and four vice rectors, is in charge of the university and represents it externally.

Vice Rector of Studies and Teaching Erwin Petek is responsible for the organization of degree programs, student services and exams, communication and optimization of general conditions for teachers and students, quality assurance and improvement in education, student and teacher mobility and development of new educational media.

Along with the Rectorate and the University Council, the Senate is one of the three governing bodies of the university and represents all groups that are members of the university: academic staff, general staff and students. The Senate is responsible for enacting and changing the curricula for degree programs and postgraduate courses, deciding as a second instance in student affairs and determining the categories for earmarking tuition fees by students.

The Senate appoints the curricular commissions, collegial bodies that have the authority to make decisions regarding degree programs offered by the university.

The following curricular commissions have been established at the Medical University of Graz:

To enforce study regulations in the first instance, a monocratic executive body is established that is represented by a dean of study affairs and his/her deputy according to § 19 (2) of the Universities Act and Med Uni Graz statutes.

The Office of Doctoral Studies is the main interface between all areas of Med Uni Graz that are concerned with doctoral studies. It informs, advises and supports university applicants, doctoral students, supervisors and instructors on questions related to doctoral education at Med Uni Graz.

The Studies and Teaching Management OU is responsible for all centrally organized strategic activities in the area of studies and teaching with the goal of providing the best possible support to instructors and students.

Med Uni Graz has set up an Academic Advisory Board that can quickly and efficiently intervene in the event of difficulties in professional treatment of instructors, studies and teaching staff and students. It provides support with decisions on disciplinary matters.

The university is a relatively complex entity and goes to great lengths to achieve its goals. Our main concerns are to prepare students for a scientific career and to develop their personalities so that they are able to meet the requirements of a career in medicine.

To fulfill the requirements for studying, psychosocial support or psychological help must be provided in many cases. Conflict-resolving communication and adapted support in problem-solving help not only those who are affected but also everyone else who would otherwise be hindered in achieving their goals.

The meetings of the Academic Advisory Board are oriented to the requirements.

Each student may have just one matriculation number. The matriculation number issued during the first admission to an Austrian university or university college of teacher education remains in use for further degree programs at other Austrian universities and university colleges of teacher education.

Students must declare any existing matriculation number when they are admitted to the Medical University of Graz.

As of June 1, 2017, only eight-digit matriculation numbers have been issued. A 0 is added to existing (seven-digit) matriculation numbers as the first digit.

The eight-digit matriculation number is composed as follows:

• First digit: Identification of the institution (1, 2 or 3 for universities, 4 for university colleges of teacher education)
• Second and third digits: Academic year of admission (the last two digits of the calendar year in which the academic year starts)
• Fourth to eighth digits: Consecutive number from the group of numbers assigned to the admitting university by the federal ministry

MEDonline is the main database and application software of the Medical University of Graz.

Students use MEDonline to do the following: 

• Print semester documents (student record sheet, enrollment confirmations, transportation pass application form)
• Retrieve their individual timetable
• Register for and withdraw from exams
• Access assessments of completed courses and exams
• Print certificates
• Change addresses (student and home addresses)

Each student receives a PIN code to register at MEDonline. The first time that students start a degree program at the Medical University of Graz, they receive the PIN code directly at the counter during admissions. Only valid once, this PIN code is replaced by a password chosen when the student first registers.

If the PIN code/password no longer works, a new PIN code may be requested. Bring your MED UNI CARD in person to the one-stop shop. If it is not possible to come to the one-stop shop in person, the PIN code can be requested by email studium(at)medunigraz.at and is sent through the postal service.

It is possible to pursue different degree programs at one or more Austrian universities at the same time. However, admission to the same degree program at two or more Austrian universities is prohibited!

Even if multiple degree programs are completed at different universities, ÖH dues (as prescribed by the Austrian National Union of Students) must only be paid once. The student may choose at which university the dues are paid.

Note that it is necessary to actively inform the degree program at the university to which dues will not be paid.

The Medical University of Graz makes it possible for highly motivated secondary school students to attend courses before they receive their school-leaving certificate. The university cooperates with "Young Science," the center for cooperation between science and schools, which receives the applications and handles the formal requirements.

Through the OeAD program, young people interested in science can attend courses, take exams, immerse themselves in the areas in which they have talent and become acquainted with a degree program.
Secondary school students who participate in this program are admitted to the university as extraordinary students (Studium UO 990 – Besuch einzelner Lehrveranstaltungen/UO 990 Program –Attendance of individual courses) and excused from paying tuition fees. Only ÖH dues (EUR 25.20) must be paid.

Courses and exams completed by extraordinary students as part of this program may be recognized in a later degree program at the Medical University of Graz.
