Doctoral Program of Medical Science

Clinical PhD Programm

The Clinical PhD program offers clinician-scientists enrolled in the Medical Science doctoral program at the Medical University of Graz the opportunity to apply for a one-year research leave. This initiative allows doctoral students in Medical Science to advance their dissertation project — by incorporating translational research or external research stays and successfully transfer into the PhD program.

Scope of the Program

Applicants must demonstrate a strong commitment to excellent scientific research and present a clear plan for expanding their current doctoral project. Students are specifically encouraged to integrate advanced methodologies such as the integration of wet-lab techniques into their research project. The dissertation committee shall be expended by a dedicated expert supporting students with the integration of the complementary techniques.

Students shall have the necessary time resources to advance their dissertation project and will receive a research leave. Awardees are therefore prohibited from undertaking any clinical work during the funding period. Departments may fill the resulting vacancy for the duration of the leave.

Duration of the research leave

The research leave is limited to twelve months.

Funding

Selected candidates receive dedicated funding of one year. Awardees are employed on a scientific, non-medical basis. During this period, no medical duties may be performed. The physician allowance and any salary components linked to medical activities will not be paid during the research stay. During the paid leave, it is important to also use vacation time.
